a5c7b9f00b When the publisher of "The Daily Sentinel" dies, his son Britt Reid inherits his newspaper. The idle Britt is a playboy that parties all the time with women and hates his father but he is forced to become the new publisher. He also meets his father's mechanic Kato, who is a skilled fighter of kung fu, and they decide to fight crime for fun wearing masks. Britt uses "The Daily Sentinel" to promote "The Green Hornet" and his sidekick, attracting the attention of the kingpin Chudnofsky, Now the Green Hornet is chased not only by the police, but also by Chudnofsky that is hunting him down.
When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head.
Saw this tonight with my two young daughters and wife. It was mildly funny, mostly in a Seth Rogen fashion with "duh" type punchlines - typical of his characters. Abusive use of "sh!t" and "a$$" with a lot of kicks in the balls throughout the movie. Worth seeing once at probably the $1 theater, but I won't be buying it. Intent of the movie was good, execution was poor. My favorite parts were the technology of the car that Kato made and his martial arts and the simple humor of Rogen's character, Brett. What's her name again? Oh yeah, Cameron Diaz was in this movie and played a small part. I've never considered her a talented actress so she made her standard performance, in my opinion. Barely any background or character development in the movie whatsoever; without the cool action cuts, awesome car and mildly entertaining scenes, I would easily rate this movie even lower.
For most of its running time, Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet" is a pleasantly relaxed super hero movie, Gondry and his team less interested in conventional comic book movie dynamics than in poking fun at that which fuels them.

And so everyone in "The Green Hornet" is undergoing a crisis of masculinity, everyone is nursing an inferiority complex and everyone is trapped in a state of prolonged adolescence. When our heroes and villains aren't worrying about appearing potent, strong, iconic and fearsome, they're either fighting over a curvaceous Cameron Diaz or being subjected to bizarre action sequences which stress blows to the crotch, involve balls, peanuts, diapers, and lots of symbolic castrations. Meanwhile, the film pokes fun at condescending, ultra-rich superheroes, their treatment of their servants, and the racist tensions revolving around their relationships with their sidekicks.

Pretty soon, however, the film finds itself needing to justify its exorbitant budget. And so Gondry's last act quickly degenerates into a string of expensive but dull action sequences in which things blow up over and over and over and over again. What was once a laid-back film which poked fun at the genre's exploitation of adolescence then swiftly turns into one filled with generic mayhem and sitcom level drama. As this is an "action comedy" (surely the most pointless, contradictory genre), nothing is ever at stake.

7.5/10 – Good first half. Worth one viewing.
The Green Hornet provides a half-hour's worth of mildly entertaining travesty before collapsing in a clamor of bombastic action sequences and lame wisecracks.
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapteda popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones.
